This course focuses on the status and rights of children within the legal system. Students will study the various legal doctrines that shape how children are addressed in the law. Students will learn how children’s rights have developed over time in the private home, in schools, in the public sphere, and under state regulation. The course does not include matters traditionally covered in LAW 9370: Family Law, such as child custody and child support incident to divorce, or LAW 9254: Juvenile Justice, including criminal investigation/arrest/detention of children.
