LAW 9212: Business Basics for Lawyers
The class will provide a better understanding of business concepts for law students without a business background, and it will supplement coverage in other business and transactional courses. Business topics will include accounting, financial statements, economics, leveraging with debt/ mortgages, valuation of businesses and cases, and federal, state, and local tax systems and regulatory frameworks. This class will be relevant and beneficial to a wide range of law students, not just those interested in a business or transactional law career. To better accommodate the different practice interests of our students, the course will include the opportunity for students to choose one of two tracks during the course. In the last several class sessions, students will have the option of attending sessions in which the topics are tailored to business students or separate sessions in which the topics are more litigation focused or students can choose to attend both sets. For the split sessions, practitioners will be invited to join as guest lecturers to assist with coverage of practice-oriented topics. Learning objectives: • Introduction to new terms so that students will be able to converse with business clients and better understand the needs and goals of their clients’ businesses. • Straightforward explanations of daunting topics (such as accounting, financial statements, economics, leveraging using debt/ mortgages, valuation of businesses and cases, and federal, state, and local tax systems and regulatory frameworks). Tailored to students without a business background to provide a foundation for working on legal matters for their business clients or participating in the business of running a law office. • Provide opportunities for students to practice skills by applying concepts through projects, such as the following: completing financial statements; calculating financial formulas; valuation of business, real estate, cases, and claims; researching financial information by industry or company; using tax and business filings in federal, state, and local systems; and financial modeling for a variety of uses. No prerequisites.
